It’s been a surprise and disappointment to me to see soo many produce items labeled wrongly. For the people out there who read these signs and are trying to buy local produce it’s very misleading and in my opinion disgusting. I personally have told the “produce person” at Sobeys that some of his produce was labeled wrong only to return the next day and find it with the same sign under it stating Product of Canada but when you read the sticker on the actual item its says Product of Mexico.
The same thing happened again today at our local Superstore.
Some might think oh not a big deal but really it is…. There are several pesticides that are banned from use in Canada and the United States but that are still manufactured here and shipped to countries like..oh for example..Mexico… We then import their produce back into our country and sell it on our shelves.
Produce like Red, Orange, Yellow and Green Peppers, Tomatoes, Avocados, and Mangoes to name a few are known as a permeable produce meaning that when these are sprayed with pesticides; the pesticide not only remains on the surface or skin of the produce but that goes all the way through into the “meat” of the entire fruit or vegetable. Regardless if it’s the super terrible ones from Mexico or the just the terrible ones found here in Canada and the U.S. try to choose organic when it comes to any produce item, especially permeable ones.
So, I guess what I’m trying to say is Read labels carefully, it may say Product of Canada but don’t be fooled by the lack of knowledge, understanding or caring of the “Produce person” who probably doesn’t really care about my health, your health or the health of your family.
Buy local and Buy Organic whenever possible and in my opinion never choose produce from Mexico, unless it’s Organic and even then be wary.
Read signs and the sticker on the produce, if you notice discrepancies tell your produce person or even better shop at local, organic health food stores where you don’t have to put your trust into a large corporation.
